VPN Checker: Is This IP a VPN, Proxy or Data Center?

This free VPN checker shows whether an IP address is known to belong to a VPN, proxy or hosting network. It checks your own IP as soon as the page opens, or you can enter any address. Use it to confirm your VPN is on, or as a proxy checker for traffic hitting your website or accounts.

Testing your VPN? If you are connected and this says "No VPN detected", your VPN may not be active or uses residential IPs. Then run the DNS & WebRTC leak test.

VPN detection relies on public blocklists and heuristics, so new or private VPN servers can be missed.

What the VPN checker tells you

The VPN checker compares an IP address against public blocklists and network data to tell you whether it belongs to a VPN, a proxy or a data center, and how risky it looks.

ResultWhat it means
VerdictA one-line answer: whether a VPN or proxy was detected for this IP.
Proxy / VPN flagYes means the IP appears in public lists of VPN, proxy or anonymizer servers.
TypeThe kind of network the address belongs to, such as a business or home connection.
Provider / networkThe company that runs the network.
Risk scoreA 0 to 100 estimate from our data provider. Higher means more abuse has been seen from this address.
Hosting-style networkThe IP belongs to a cloud or hosting provider. Real home users rarely browse from these, so they are often VPNs, bots or servers.
Country and ASNWhere the IP is registered and the network number (ASN) that announces it.

How to know if your VPN is working

Your VPN is working if three things are true: your public IP and location have changed to the VPN server's, the address is the one your VPN assigned, and nothing leaks your real IP or DNS.

  1. Check that your IP changed. Before connecting, note your IP and location with the IP Lookup. Connect to your VPN and reload: you should now see the VPN server's IP and country.
  2. Run this VPN checker. With the VPN on, many VPN addresses show as a VPN, proxy or hosting network. If yours shows "not detected", the VPN may use residential or brand-new IPs, which isn't proof it's off.
  3. Test for leaks. Run the DNS & WebRTC leak test. Your DNS resolvers should belong to your VPN, and WebRTC shouldn't reveal your real IP.

If your real IP or your home provider's DNS servers appear in any of these checks, your VPN isn't fully protecting you.

VPN vs proxy: what this proxy checker detects

TypeWhat it isEncrypts your traffic?
VPNRoutes all traffic from your device through an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server.Yes
ProxyForwards traffic for one app or browser through another server.Usually not
Data center IPAn address at a cloud or hosting provider, used by servers, bots and many VPNs and proxies.Depends on the service

Why VPN and proxy detection matters

  • Website owners use it to spot fake sign-ups, bots, card fraud and logins from unusual networks.
  • Banks and streaming services often block known VPN ranges, which is why some sites stop working on a VPN.
  • VPN users can confirm their connection is actually going through the VPN.

Detection relies on public blocklists and heuristics, so new or residential VPN servers can be missed, and shared networks such as offices, universities and some mobile carriers can be flagged by mistake.

Keep your IP and browsing private

VPN Plus hides your IP address and location from the sites you visit, with a no-logs policy, a kill switch and built-in DNS and WebRTC leak protection. It's in early access now.

VPN & Proxy Checker FAQ

How do I know if my VPN is working?

Check that your public IP and location have changed to the VPN server's, run this VPN checker, then run the DNS & WebRTC leak test. If your real IP or your provider's DNS servers show up, your VPN isn't fully protecting you.

Why does my VPN show as "not detected"?

Some providers use residential or recently added IPs that aren't on public lists yet. Use the IP Lookup to confirm the address differs from your normal one.

Why is my normal connection flagged as a VPN or proxy?

Shared company networks, universities and some mobile carriers reuse addresses that were previously used by proxies, so they can appear on blocklists.

What does the risk score mean?

It's a 0 to 100 estimate from our data provider of how much abuse has been seen from the address. A higher score means more reported abuse, not that the person using it is malicious.

Can websites tell that I'm using a VPN?

Often, yes. Many sites check visitors' IPs against the same kind of VPN and data center lists this tool uses, which is why banks and streaming services sometimes block VPNs.

Is a VPN the same as a proxy?

No. Both hide your IP, but a VPN encrypts all your device's traffic, while a proxy usually handles only certain apps or browser traffic and often doesn't encrypt it.

Can I check someone else's IP address?

Yes. Enter any IPv4 or IPv6 address to see whether it belongs to a VPN, proxy or hosting network.
